FMAD 1110: Fashion Fundamentals Textbook: 5.1 Textile Production

Textile Production

Textile Production

Textiles are produced by individual fibers (such as wool hair, etc.) merging together through the felting process or spinning (to become yarns). Fibers that are spun together as yarn can then be woven, knitted, or crocheted to make fabric. Plain unfinished fabrics (greige goods) then can be printed on or dyed to change their color (yarns can also be dyed before making them into a fabric).

Making Fabric

  • Felting fibers together to form a fabric:

  • Spinning rabbit fibers to become wool yarn:

  • Weaving yarn to become fabric:

  • Knitting (using two needles) or Crocheting  (using a hook) for yarn to become fabric:

Working With Fabric

  • Greige Goods are unfinished fabrics that someone known as a Converter buys and converts into a finished product.
