FMAD 1110: Fashion Fundamentals Textbook: 6.2 Product Development Stages

Product Development Stages

Product Development Stages

Stages of Product Development:

1. Plan Product Line- the Designer/Production Team creates the line based on trends by choosing colors, fabrics, materials, etc. for product lines)

2. Create Design Concept- Sketch/create product from muslin (determine cost to create garment).

3. Design Development- Finished Samples are made, patterns are made, designs are chosen for final product line. Computer aided design (CAD) of the product is created digitally as a computer sketch/image.

4. Plan Production- At this stage, the product designs that were chosen to develop go through a sourcing process where garment components such as thread, fabrics, notions like zippers/buttons, etc. are chosen for purchase to determine cost to produce the garment. Then, samples are shown to retail buyers for ordering to stock their store shelves with the product.

5. Production- Mass production based on buyers orders are fulfilled through fabric cutting, sewing, and finishing the garment by sewing garment labels, buttons, etc. before being inspected for quality control/assurance to ensure that the product meets production standards (correctly sewn together, etc.).

6. Line Distribution- Finished products need barcodes and tags before being shipped to retailers.
