Chapter 2: Atoms, Molecules and Ions

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • describe Dalton’s postulates of atomic theory
  • summarize and interpret the results of the experiments of Thomson, Milliken, and Rutherford
  • write and interpret symbols that depict the atomic number, mass number, and charge of an atom or ion
  • define isotopes, the atomic mass unit and average atomic mass and calculate average atomic mass
  • identify metals, nonmetals, and metalloids on the periodic table
  • recognize chemical formula and define ionic and molecular (covalent) compounds
  • derive names for ionic compounds including acids and binary molecular compounds
