3D Teapot

[FOR MORE INFORMATION]

Utah Teapot

The Utah Teapot is a 3D computer model that has become a standard reference object with today's computers graphics. It is a mathematical model of a regular teapot that appears as a solid, cylindrical, and convex. It was used to create an easy 3D scene with a (somewhat) complex model for basic geometry reference. This object was chosen because it is a simple object, and is familiar to most people. The teapot had many elements that made it ideal to use. For example, its round, smooth texture, has a handle, and can project a shadow on itself.

Newell sat down with a piece of graph paper and completely sketched his wife's teapot by eye. He then made th mathematical data that described the teapot's geometry available to the public.

3D Modeling

Why is 3D modeling important?

3D modeling is important in Digital Humanities. Here are some ways 3D modeling photography can help us practice and understand humanities.

Prototyping:

3D modeling can help us to prototype images. Instead of just a 2D image, the 3D models help us to see the product from different views and dimensions. This helps us to get a better feel for the product that we are observing.

360 Degree View:

2D images present a single view and only show you one part of the product. Even if you take pictures of the product from different angles, it will still not be as accurate as an image taken with 3D software. 3D software allows us to see the entire object and all it's dimensions and details.

Animations:

Animations further extend the visual significance and provide more detail than images without animation. 3D models can bring the product to life on the screen, which is something 2D images are not capable of.
