World War I in Bulloch County Memorial Project: George Falagan

George Falagan

George Falagan was born on August 10, 1895 in Pooler, GA. Falagan was drafted on June 5, 1917 and he was 23 at the time of his departure for the front. Falagan was the son of Isah and Ella Falagan, with 8 other siblings. George was tall and well built, with dark brown hair and bright blue eyes. He was single and unfortunately never got the chance to marry. Before the draft, George and his siblings worked as farmers, helping their father make the family’s living. George was employed on the farm of W.L. Hendrix near Arcola, GA.

Falagan trained at Fort Screven on Tybee Island and was attached to the Coast Artillery Corps #2. On October 6, 1918, George Falagan died en route to Europe in the sinking of the HMS Otranto. The ship sank due to a hole caused by a collision with another boat, the HMS Kashmir. Falagan's body was never recovered and his body was declared lost at sea. He is memorialized at Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial, France, at the Tablets of the Missing.
