World War I in Bulloch County Memorial Project: PVT Neil H. Hagan

Neil H. Hagan

Neil H. Hagan, sometimes referred to as Neal, was born on October 11th, 1896, in Hubert, GA, a  city within Bulloch County, about twenty-two miles from Statesboro. Based on his registration card, Neil was a tall man with medium-weight blonde hair and blue eyes. His father, James F. Hagan, was also born in Hubert. Neil was registered for the army on June 5th, 1918, at the age of twenty-one. Like many soldiers from this area, Neal trained at Ft. Oglethorpe. It is unclear what his career within the military is, however, based on a 1910 census, we do know prior to his service, he was a laborer or farmer of sorts. By the time of his selective service registration, he was employed at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA and lived in nearby Philadelphia.

At some point, Neil managed to build a family or at least obtain a wife, as his obituary mentions his spouse, Elizabeth V. Hagan. Neal died from tuberculosis at Camp Greenleaf, GA before ever leaving the United States. His obituary is written in the Central New Jersey Home News and his death is also recorded in the Official U.S. Bulletin of November 16, 1918. His obituary expressed that on October 13th, 1918, Neil passed away in Georgia or Tennessee. His obituary states GA as the place of death, however, a Tennessee city death record has his place of death as Chattanooga, TN. Hagan was buried at Hubert Methodist Church in Brooklet, GA on Oct. 20, 1918.
