PFC Claude B. Terry

Claude B. Terry was born in Hampton, South Carolina on November 22nd, 1893. He was the son of Daniel Webb Terry and Sarah Ann Walling Terry. Claude was the second oldest of nine children with four brothers and four sisters, with his oldest brother passing at the age of 2. Sadly, Claude lost his mother at the age of 10 in 1903 due to illness. According to the Bulloch Times and Statesboro News, Claude was not widely known in Statesboro, but his father worked as a carpenter in Statesboro. Claude’s younger brother, Clarence E. Terry served in World War I and survived the war. 

Before World War I, Claude moved from South Georgia to Atlanta and worked for the Atlantic Steel Company. Claude enlisted in the war while living in Atlanta and received his training at Forth McPherson. Initially, Claude was a member of Company “M” 47th Infantry but in August of 1917, he became a member of the 9th Infantry. He remained with the 9th Infantry was a part of until his death in July of 1918. Claude served in action overseas in Europe from March 1918 until his death in July of 1918.

Claude was killed in action at the Battle of Chateau Thierry in France by a German sniper. He was one of 1, 811 Americans killed at the Battle of Chateau Thierry, which resulted in an Allied victory. Claude is buried at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in Seringes-et- Nesles, France. Several years after his death, Claude’s father, Daniel applied for a Victory Medal in Claude’s honor. Claude was never married nor had any children. He was survived by his father Daniel as well as his siblings Bertha Ann, Hilma, Clarence, Myra Edna, Eugene, Ethel, and Derward.
