The Brain Booth initiative at the GS Libraries, is an innovative project promoting mindfulness and contemplative pedagogy as a means of introducing students and community to metacognition for academic and life success. This informal, experiential space is where you can learn about the mind body connection, reduce stress and optimize learning.

Brain Booth Activities include: Biofeedback, Coloring, Curated Game station, Gratitude-Express, Light and Sound Therapy, Massage Chair, Meditation, Origami, Virtual Reality-Immerse, and more. The biofeedback unit, for example, is a resilience training device that measures your coherence levels and heart rate variability (HRV). Coherence directly impacts how a person physiologically reacts to and reduces stress. The Brain Booth is open to GS students, staff, and faculty as well as community members, please drop by the second floor of Henderson Library or the first floor at Lane Library to experience the Brain Booth for yourself.

Transforming Lives:  The Brain Booth addresses an essential need of our students and so many others.  Students face many challenges and in a fast-paced society, do not always have the time needed to process readings or rest. In general, they have to navigate between two major factors affecting their performance and well-being: coping with stress and dealing with distractions while trying to sustain productive cognitive activities. The scholarly literature supports mindful practices to reduce stress and anxiety and help students improve study skills and knowledge retention. The Brain Booth offers mindfulness practices through Intentional Brain Breaks and activities that support Emotional Self-Regulation and foster Singular Thoughtful Focus. Mindfulness training has immediate impacts on attention and focus. Our student testimonials on the positive effects the Brain Booth activities have on their academic performance and overall well-being are the impetus fueling our efforts to sustain the initiative.
