Student Learning Assessment Resources

In this video from the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), two assessment leaders discuss data collection and answer questions regarding priorities, mistakes and roadblocks, policies and procedures, and multiple data sources. How can their experiences and insights help you to optimize your data collection and analysis practices?

Assessment Data Overview

There are a number of potential challenges when it comes to collecting and analyzing assessment data, unique to specific programs and courses. Developing standard and sustainable data collection processes, choosing analysis techniques, and extracting meaningful conclusions from the data collected all take planning and time.

Resources in this section are aligned to three areas of the academic program student learning outcomes assessment template and the general education student learning outcomes assessment template:

  • Data collection -- You plan for collecting assessment data that can be used to draw conclusions about strengths and weaknesses in student learning within your academic program or core course.
  • Results -- Techniques for organizing and presenting data so that it can be easily read and understood, following best practices for aligning objective test items and analytic rubric traits to specific program or course SLOs.
  • Discussion -- Interpretation of the results, including insights about student strengths and weaknesses that can be addressed through adjustments to teaching or curriculum to improve student achievement of student learning outcomes
