The Newton Building was announced during the Duncan Inauguration plan, on April 2, 1972. It was one of the few new buildings getting dedicated. The Newton Building housed a number of departments consisting of the school of Arts and Science, History, Psychology, Sociology-anthropology, Political Science and English.

Hester Newton

About Hester Newton

The Newton building was named after Miss Hester Newton. She was a member of the Georgia Southern Faculty for over 25 years: from 1928 until her retirement in 1953. She was born on June 2, 1883, In Halcyondale, Georgia. She was privately tutored her twelve years of life and transitioned to public school in later years. She graduated from Brenau College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She later got her got her Masters and Bachelors of Science degree, and studied at Columbia State, in New York City. After receiving her degrees, she taught at Oliver Public Schools and later taught in Statesboro and Reidsville schools. She move to North Carolina for a brief time period and taught in North Carolina as well. After teaching k-12 she found Georgia Southern. She was very proactive with many organizations. She was a member of National Education Association, Georgia Educational Association, and The American Association of University Women. She was also very proactive with the Baptist Church and taught Sunday school every Sunday. She winced, retired and lived in Sylvania, GA.
