Whose House? Building Names at Georgia Southern: Eugene M. Bishop Alumni House

The Eugene M. Bishop Alumni House is located at 1801 Akins Blvd, which is near the Recreation Activity Center on the Statesboro campus. This building gives non-student entities a place to plan, organize, and/or host events. This building is named after a non-alumni, Dr. Eugene Bishop, who served as a benefactor and ally to Georgia Southern University for many years.

Dr. Eugene M. Bishop, originally of Atlanta, was a benefactor and member of the Board of Trustees of Georgia Southern. Two buildings, the Gene Bishop Field House as well as the Eugene M. Bishop Alumni House, are named after him thanks to his generous contributions to the university. Though Dr. Bishop never attended Georgia Southern, his love for the university was realized through his children's attendance.

After graduation from West Fulton High School, Bishop entered the United States Army in 1953, and was then honorably discharged after two years of active duty. In his professional life, Dr. Bishop was owner and president of Health Service Centers Inc., which is a corporation managing several long-term healthcare facilities, hospitals, and pharmacies. This led to his presidency of the Georgia Health Care Association as well as his tenure as the Regional Vice President of the American Health Care Association. Soon after, Dr. Bishop served as the National President of the American Health Care Association for two consecutive terms.

In 2004, Dr. Bishop was elected to be on the GSU Board of Trustees and also simultaneously served as a member of GSU's Business Advisory Council for the School of Business. His legacy at Georgia Southern lives on in the form of the immeasurable impact he has had on the university as well as the generous donations in both academic and athletic realms.
