Tutorial on Types of Periodicals & Types of Articles

Research Articles

Research articles present original research or observations, often describing the results of a research study or project.  Articles often have a standard format, including sections such as:

  • abstract
  • keywords-provided by the author(s)
  • literature review or historical background
  • methodology--techniques and tools used in carrying out the study
  • results or findings
  • conclusion

Research Articles are lengthy and may have charts or graphs--specific data that were gathered in the study.  Advertising is limited to books and upcoming meetings or conferences. Audience: scholars or researchers.

NOTE: they are NOT good sources for basic summaries of a topic but they ARE sources of authoritative information about previous research  and THEY CAN provide descriptions of the latest research in a field.
