K-4 Mathematics Resources for Parents/Guardians

Why did we create these?

These resources were created for two reasons.  First, to help parents better understand some of the strategies their children are using to model and solve problems in math; and second, to help undergraduate students create materials they would use in their classroom.  Math is not being taught the same way many adults learned when they were in elementary school.  The Georgia Math Standards focus on solving problems in multiple ways, using manipulatives (hands-on objects) to make sense of math, and focus on students explaining their reasoning process. Parents/Guardians may not have experience with these ideas, which is why we wanted to create resources for them.  We have videos that explain how to use the virtual manipulatives, videos that explain how to work through concepts, and tasks to work together with children to support families learning math at home.  Our initial videos focus on place value understanding, because that is the foundation for all math concepts.  We encourage feedback on this site and the resources, to continue to make it better for other families as they work through these tasks and videos.

All undergraduate students engaging in this project will be teachers when they graduate. This project allows them to create tasks, give and receive feedback on each others tasks, and revise based on feedback.  They also give feedback on videos, so videos go through at least three rounds of revisions.  Our intention is that they share these resources when they become teachers with their colleagues and families to reach adults in Georgia, the country, and the world.
