What is an academic journal?

An academic or scholarly journal is a periodical in which scholarship relating to a particular academic discipline is published. Articles within the journal are written by experts in a particular field of study and reports the results of original research in that field.

English Literature, Writing, and Linguistics

The Allegheny Review This journal is dedicated exclusively to undergraduate poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and art.
The Comparative Literature Undergraduate Journal
Digital Literature Review This is an undergraduate journal featuring peer-reviewed research by multiple contributors from various universities and academic disciplines. Each issue of the DLR will focus on a compelling theme that inspires original, thought-provoking research. This annual, student-run journal is a product of Ball State University’s immersive learning initiative and is supported by the BSU English Department and the Office of the Provost.
Madison Journal of Literary Criticism The Madison Journal of Literary Criticism is an international publication of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Oswald Review: An International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Criticism in the Discipline of English Established in 1999,The Oswald Review is the first intercollegiate refereed journal of criticism and research in the discipline of English. Published annually, it accepts submission in the field of English from undergraduates in this country and abroad. A faculty member's endorsement is required.
Queen City Writers: A Journal of Undergraduate Writing & Composing Established in 2012, this is a refereed journal that publishes essays and multimedia work by undergraduate students affiliated with any post-secondary institution. (University of Cincinnati)
Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle: Journal of Creative Writing This is an annual journal of creative writing that publishes fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Submissions should not exceed 2,500 words.
XChanges: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Technical Communication, Rhetoric, and Writing across the Curriculum Hosted by the University of New Mexico, this academic journal publishes two issues each year and focuses on topics pertaining to technical communication, rhetoric, and other writing topics.
Young Scholars in Writing This academic journal publishes research by undergraduates on topics pertaining to rhetoric and writing. It is peer-reviewed by undergraduate students and faculty members from colleges across the U.S.

History

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History is dedicated to promoting undergraduate students’ research interest in history and their writing skills. The journal is also hoped to strengthen the collaborations in learning between undergraduates and graduates, students and faculty, and history majors and those from other study fields.
ARCHIVE: An Undergraduate Journal of History (Univ. of Wisconsin) ARCHIVE is an award-winning journal of history published annually by undergraduate History majors, in partnership with the History Department and the UW-Madison chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Each spring semester, the editorial board enrolls in History 601: Historical Publishing Practicum, which is taught by the journal’s faculty advisor, and publishes that year’s volume at the end of the semester. ARCHIVE accepts submissions from undergraduate students of all majors and from colleges and universities in the US or abroad.
Clio's Scroll: The Berkeley Undergraduate History Journal Clio’s Scroll, the Berkeley Undergraduate History Journal, is published twice yearly by students of the Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 1981, Clio’s Scroll has published over thirty issues. The journal aims to provide undergraduates with the opportunity to publish outstanding historical work. Clio’s Scroll is produced with the financial support from the Townsend Center for the Humanities, the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), and Berkeley’s Department of History. The views expressed in the articles are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of the journal, the editors, the university, or the sponsors. The journal publishes articles by undergraduates and recent graduates of any university, so long as the submissions are historical in nature. Clio’s Scroll is led by two co-editors-in-chief, a managing editor, and a staff of qualified associate editors. Membership in Clio’s Scroll is limited to undergraduates at the University of California, Berkeley. The journal is committed to a diverse and inclusive editorial board.
Columbia Journal of History The Columbia Journal of History is an independent, peer-reviewed undergraduate research publication that promotes intellectual inquiry and recognizes outstanding historical literature on diverse subjects.
Crimson Historical Review (Univ. of Alabama) The Crimson Historical Review is an undergraduate, peer-reviewed, research journal, staffed by undergraduate Honors students and History Majors. Submissions are welcome from all majors, but must deal with an historical topic. Submissions must be based on original, primary source research that engages with extant scholarship. Submissions must have been written in an undergraduate class or in a faculty-supervised independent study for credit, and must have the support of a faculty member. The Review publishes two issues yearly and submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Proposals for themed and guest-edited issues are welcome. Ezra's Archives (Cornell Univ.) Ezra's Archives is a publication put forth biannually by the Cornell Historical Society. This journal, launched in the Spring of 2011, showcases stellar examples of undergraduate research in the field of history. In the Fall of 2011, Ezra's Archives expanded to accept submissions from undergraduates at other universities.
Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era is an open access, peer-reviewed, undergraduate journal. The journal annually publishes undergraduate papers on the Civil War Era and its lasting memory. We are interested in academic essays, public history essays, and book reviews broadly relating to the American Civil War.
Grand Valley Journal of History The Grand Valley Journal of History provides undergraduate students from all institutions with an opportunity to publish their historically-based research. The GVJH is a journal for all majors, operated by student editors and overseen by a faculty advisory board.
History Matters: An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research (Appalachian State Univ.) History Matters is an undergraduate history journal published annually on this website by the Department of History at Appalachian State University. The journal is edited by undergraduates with the help of a faculty board.
JAHMS: The Journal of Art History and Museum Studies The Journal of Art History and Museum Studies (JAHMS) is a student-edited, undergraduate peer-reviewed journal, launching in Winter 2021 with its inaugural issue on the theme of “Art and Resilience.” Led by its student editorial board, JAHMS publishes issues online in the Fall and Spring academic terms and welcomes intercollegiate scholarly research of students across the globe.
Michigan Journal of History The Michigan Journal of History is a student-run organization seeking to publish undergraduate papers in an online journal and with limited circulation paper copies. Our aim is to encourage students to pursue their passion for history by providing them a chance to become published historians.
Stony Brook Undergraduate History Journal The Stony Brook Undergraduate History Journal is a peer-reviewed publication showcasing the research of Stony Brook University students. The journal offers new additions to the historical record on local, national and international levels while providing students with an opportunity to develop their writing and editing skills. We accept submissions in various forms, including but not limited to historical essays, interviews, book reviews, etc.
Synthesis: An Undergraduate Journal of the History of Science (Harvard Univ.) In the spring of 2009, undergraduates in the History and Science concentration launched a new journal called SYNTHESIS dedicated to publishing undergraduate scholarship -- worldwide -- in history of science and its allied disciplines. SYNTHESIS is now the History of Science department's online undergraduate journal, and it remains the only such journal out there. Our editorial staff consists of over 15 History and Science undergraduate concentrators and we are entirely student-led, under the supervision of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Prof. Rebecca Lemov. We have created a new website, comprised of student papers, interviews with faculty, reviews of the latest hot topics in the history of science, and much more.
Traces: the UNC Journal of History Traces: the UNC Journal of History is an award-winning student-run journal based in the UNC History Department. It was created in 2011 by UNC-Chapel Hill students G. Lawson Kuehnert and Mark W. Hornburg, with support from the UNC-Chapel Hill Parents Council. Over ten years of operation, run entirely by UNC students, Traces has twice been the recipient of Phi Alpha Theta’s prestigious Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize (2013, 2017) and student research featured in the journal has been recognized by Phi Alpha Theta and other university and national organizations for their exceptional quality.
The UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Journal of History We are a space for undergraduates to share original research and other scholarly works of history. At the Journal we are interested in historical content on any and all facets of our collective pasts.
Vanderbilt Historical Review Vanderbilt Historical Review is an undergraduate-run, peer-reviewed research journal that annually publishes substantive articles and book reviews that demonstrate exemplary historical research, argumentation, and contribute uniquely to historical scholarship. VHR welcomes submissions from current undergraduates of national and international four-year institutions.
West Point Undergraduate Historical Review Report is a historical review that publishes the work of undergraduate students. They are expanding to include submissions from students at other colleges and universities. They encourage submissions from all undergraduates interested in historical research. Report is published both electronically and in booklet form during the spring and fall semesters.

Philosophy

Aporia This is an undergraduate journal of philosophy at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Aporia is published twice yearly: an online edition in the fall, and a print edition in the spring. The staff of Aporia consists of philosophy students at Brigham Young University.
Episteme This is a student-run journal that aims to recognize and encourage excellence in undergraduate philosophy by providing examples of some of the best work currently being done in undergraduate philosophy programs. Episteme is distinguished as being the oldest undergraduate philosophy publication of its kind.
STANCE: An International Undergraduate Research Journal An International Undergraduate Philosophy Journal produced and edited entirely by undergraduate students. It aims to enrich student learning by providing an opportunity for undergraduate students to have their original scholarly work reviewed by or published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

World Languages & Cultures

Afkar: The Undergraduate Journal of Middle East Studies An academic journal focusing on the study of politics, history, culture and society in the Middle East and North Africa. The journal offers undergraduate students an interdisciplinary platform to publish original research articles and shorter essays, and welcomes submissions from a wide range of fields within the humanities and social sciences, including history, political science, anthropology, sociology, literature, art history, religious studies, and geography.
The Kennesaw Tower An undergraduate research journal affiliated with and based in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Kennesaw State University.

Music

Nota Bene: Canadian Undergraduate Journal of Musicology A journal developed by the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University Canada. It seeks to publish essays of a high critical and rhetorical standard, written by undergraduate students from universities around the world. Essays in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, music theory, music education, and interdisciplinary subjects with a focus on the above are invited. All submissions are double-blind reviewed by a panel of professors from across Canada.

Interdisciplinary Journals

Americana An undergraduate research journal from the University of Notre Dame’s Department of American Studies. Founded by American Studies major Julianne Downing (Class of 2022), Americana is a student-centered publication. In all aspects of its creation, Americana seeks to achieve these goals: Acknowledge the high-quality and diverse undergraduate research of American Studies (AMST) and the Gallivan Program for Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy (JED) undergraduates Encourage students to conduct research that explores both popular and academic curiosities relating to American Studies Foster an interdisciplinary conversation between students, past and present Provide opportunities for undergraduate publication
American Journal of Undergraduate Research A national, independent, faculty peer-reviewed, open-source, quarterly, multidisciplinary student research journal, established in 2002.
Apollon: Undergraduate E-Journal This journal strives to take advantage of the unique opportunity of venturing into the digital humanities by engaging with image, text, sound, video, and a variety of presentation platforms in the process of showcasing the many species of undergraduate research.
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research Publishes original, scholarly research undertaken by undergraduates from any college or university.
Crossing Borders: A Multidisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship Seeks to encourage research among undergraduate students at Kansas State University and elsewhere.
Inquiries Journal An open-access, multidisciplinary student journal focused on presenting student scholarship in the social sciences, arts, and humanities.
Journal of Student Research An Academic, Multidisciplinary, and Faculty-reviewed Journal (Houston, Texas) devoted to the rapid dissemination of current research published by high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.
Liberated Arts: A Journal for Undergraduate Research Publishes radical and original student research on a variety of topics, with the aim of helping students participate in our wider academic research community.
Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship Provides an online space for undergraduate writers across the disciplines to share their work outside of the context and constraints of the college classroom. Each issue centers on a topic of contemporary interest to a global audience, fostering critical conversations that traverse disciplinary, cultural, and national borders.
Sprinkle: An Undergraduate Journal of Feminist and Queer Studies A peer-reviewed journal devoted to the diverse voices of emerging scholar-activists, authors, and artists in Women’s, Gender & Queer Studies, and related fields of inquiry. First established at McGill University in 2007, this journal has been published annually at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo since 2013 and welcomes submissions from around the world.
SURJ: The Stanford Undergraduate Research Journal An annual, peer-reviewed publication of research articles from all academic fields. The mission of SURJ is to encourage, recognize, and reward intellectual activity beyond the classroom while providing a forum for the exchange of research and ideas.
Undergraduate Research Journal A national double-blind, educator-reviewed print and electronic journal published annually in the Winter. The journal is a forum for multidisciplinary undergraduate research and creative endeavors within higher education such as, but not limited to: Case studies, conceptual pieces, creative endeavors, creative writing, journalism writings, literature reviews, original art, photography, scientific studies, etc. The journal is designed to be read not deciphered.
