African Americans in Burke County, Georgia: 1800-1865 presented by Torrey Long: About this Project

About this Project

Hello. My name is Torrey Long. I created this digital exhibit as part of my master's project in Public History. It accompanies a physical exhibit titled "Camp Lawton: An African American Perspective," that I installed in the Magnolia Springs History Center at Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, Georgia.

My physical exhibit focuses on how African Americans influenced Camp Lawton's construction. This digital project serves as a platform to expand on ideas constrained by space in my physical exhibit. Thus, it goes into greater detail on specific African Americans imprisoned at Camp Lawton. It also goes into greater detail on African Americans throughout Burke County, Georgia, which is the county the Confederate Government built Camp Lawton in.
