APA 7th ed: Books & Ebooks

Notes changes in the new edition and provides examples for students to follow for writing and citing.

Formatting

General Guidelines:
Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), with 1" margins on all sides.  Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page.

 

Reference List:
Double-space the reference list, both within and between references. Do not add extra lines between references. Apply a hanging indent for all references using the paragraph-formatting function of your word-processing program: The first line is flush left, and all subsequent lines are indented 0.5 in.

Tips

  • If your professor wants you to include a DOI or URL, present both DOIs and URLs as hyperlinks (i.e., beginning with “http:” or “https:”). You may use short DOIs or shortened URLs if desired.

Author's Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial if given. (Year of Publication). Title of Book: Subtitle if given. Publisher.

Note:

Place of Publication is not required for 7th Edition. Publisher can also be abbreviated, as shown below.

Databases are not required for eBooks.

For Government Documents, add issuing body or department after Publisher Name.

Note:

Authors' names are separated by commas. Put a comma and an ampersand (&) before the name of the last author.

Must include ALL names in the reference list citation for publications with up to 20 authors.

For articles with more than 20 authors, include the first 19, followed by an ellipsis, and ending with the final name on the list.

Place of publication is not required in 7th Edition.

Database is not required for eBooks obtained from library catalog.

Two or More Works by the Same Author

Follow the steps for citing a book as usual and list entries by year (earliest comes first).

Note:

References with no dates come before references with dates.

When an author appears both as a sole author and, in another citation, as the first author of a group, list the single-author entry first.

References that have the same first author and different second and/or third authors are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the second author, so on and so forth.
