by Lauren Scharhag
Men shuffling along like the dead
Men ambling and milling like shades on Hades’ riverbanks
What thanks for their toil
Loading and unloading flatbeds in warehouses along the riverfront
Friday payday afternoon’s jubilance fades into Monday hangovers
A man with stark black stitches in his head from where he tumbled off a truck bed
With a fifth of Jack in his hand
Drives a forklift.
