Donald Norman talks about how the more personal an item is the more someone would want to look at it and keep it around longer. When we see things that means something to us we tend to get attached because it soothes our emotions. When we buy video games we get addicted to we usually end up letting it go after we've played it for a while. But if you have a picture of you and your favorite grandpa that passed away that you had a good connection with we tend to hold on to it.
Many companies take advantage of this like google with the satisfying but simple logo and website of google. While some websites are behind in this category because of the fact that their websites aren't as simple and easy to use. Donald Norman states that "user perceive objects that are aesthetically pleasing as being more effective". Emotion can be a positive and negative reaction of the user on the website as a response to specific design elements. That being said google designed their website as a blank screen with a colorful google design and just a search bar. This fits mosts peoples emotional design because of how simple it is while satisfying the researcher with a response in a click of a button. Google has almost completely taken over sites like yahoo because of it. When you do research on a site like yahoo you have more than a search bar to look at. They have many different news stories on the main page and adds popping up without a satisfying design and this can be seen as too overwhelming to some users. Google nailed their emotional design with the simplicity and satisfying home page which is why it has basically taken over other search engines.
Lanier talks a lot about how technology can have negative impacts on us. He talks about how it stimulates our brain as if it was a nicotine addiction. He says that people are more likely to react to negative punishments or stimuli that everyone faces on a regular basis. With social media we can see a lot of good things but theres even more bad things. Like people arguing on instagram or twitter. People tend to get into the mix and express there emotions which can cause a lot of backlash and since its free to do a lot of people do it. Lenier thinks we should remake the internet to where we pay for certain things we search with more accuracy and without having conspiracy theories pop up or anything negative. Or if you need doctors advice you can get it from a professionals advice rather than "Cranks". He talks about how companies like google cant diversify because some people are hooked.
