Editorials are not equivalent to research articles since they serve a different purpose. They are intended to provide opinion or personal perspective on a topic but are not the product of research. Similarly, Letters to the Editor are often written by readers of a magazine or journal expressing an opinion on a topic. They may be scholars or researchers but their letters and editorials are NOT considered "scholarly."
You can recognize these types of articles by their:
- shorter length (compared to other articles in the journal or magazine issue), and they
- usually lack references, data or illustrations
