ENGL 1101 Comp I MITCHELL: Searching the Catalog (GIL Find)

1. Navigate to library.georgiasouthern.edu -- you will see GIL-Find as one of the choices in the "Search for Resources" box.

2. Enter search terms that pertain to your subject, connecting the search terms with Boolean Operators. See this guide to learn more about creating search strings. 

 

3. Click the "search" button to find sources.

4. After clicking "search," you will be brought to your search results list.

 

 

You can apply filters to narrow down and refine the search results on your list until the results all meet your search criteria. 

 

 

By default, GIL Find will search the entire Georgia Southern University Libraries collection. You can narrow this search by campus (Statesboro - Henderson Library / Savannah - Lane Library), or broaden the search to the entire University System of Georgia.

 

Need to parse through these results later? Get a permalink or QR code for your search result list and email it to yourself! 

 

       

 

5. Once you're narrowed your search result list, you may start pulling up sources.

On GIL Find, you will see a variety of sources: books, ebooks, and DVDs for example. This walkthrough will cover how to access books and ebooks. 

 

 

You may click on the source's title to view the source's detailed record. The detailed record will give you useful information about the source, but it is not the source itself. Use the detailed record to find new search terms, read the abstract, generate a citation (but double-check it carefully!!), and email the source to yourself. 

 

 

If the item is in a physical format, for example, a print book, you will use the call number to locate this item. 
Need help looking up a book with it's call number? Just ask a librarian or stop by the welcome center for help. 

 

 

To access an ebook, click on the link that says "online access" to view your options for viewing the full text of the ebook.

Most of the time, you will be able to access the full text of the ebook. Some ebooks are only available as a preview, like the example below. You will have 5 minutes to preview the book before access is restricted; you can also suggest the item for the library to purchase within the database. 

 

 

Sometimes, full text for a source will not be available. In these cases, start by clicking the "find it" button. This will take you to GIL Find, where you can see a preview of the book and/or request the book through GIL Express from another USG library.
