Carved in Harmony: Cult Statuary in Qing China: Additional Information

The Collection

The statues were carved from single pieces of wood before being installed in a shrine or house. They were originally painted with bright pigments and gilded with metal. Time and weather have worn the statues, but traces of these colors are still visible, showing elaborate patterns. All ten statues show a unity of style and materials, suggesting a shared origin.
