What is an academic journal?

Academic journals, sometimes called scholarly journals, are a periodical (published on a regular basis) that publishes scholarly information pertaining to a certain topic. They typically focus on a specific subject, such as nursing or history. 

Examples: 

An academic article is found within an academic journal. Usually, experts in a given field or discipline peer-review an academic article before it is released.

Tips for Searching Discover & GIL-Find (and other library databases)

  • Use quotation marks to enclose phrases (more than two words)
    • Examples:
      • "Artificial Intelligence"
      • "Machine Learning"
      • "Criminal Justice"
  • Use AND between words to narrow your search (makes the search more specific) 
    • Examples:  
      • "Artificial Intelligence" AND "Criminal Justice"
      • "Artificial Intelligence" AND "College Writing"
      • "Artificial Intelligence" AND "College Writing" AND Plagiarism
    • Feel free to add more than two keywords/phrases 
  • Use OR between words to broaden your search (less specific search, but more results)
    • "Artificial Intelligence" OR "Marching Learning"
    • "Artificial Intelligence" OR "Criminal Justice" 
    • "Artificial Intelligence" OR "College Writing" OR Plagiarism (this would be an exceptionally broad search)
  • Whereas Discover is ideal for finding academic journals, GIL-Find is ideal for finding books and e-books in the library's catalog.
