Survey of Chemistry II Textbook (CHEM 1152K)

Chapter 5 Introduction

The change that a substance undergoes can either be classified as a physical change or a chemical change. In a physical change, although the substance may appear to look different, the composition or identity remains unchanged. Alternatively, a chemical change (also referred to as a chemical reaction) involves changes to the composition or identity of a substance. There are several different types of chemical reactions and more than one way of classifying them. In this chapter, we will explore the process in which organic compounds undergo chemical changes.

Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Categorize components of redox reactions.
  • Differentiate between oxidation/reduction of inorganic and organic compounds.
  • Classify common types of organic reactions.
  • Predict products of common organic reactions.
