CRJU 2010-Universal Justice : Getting Started

Keyword Searching in a Database

It is important to map out how you will go about searching for research materials on your topic prior to beginning your search.

Steps for Creating a Search Strategy

1. Summarize your topic
2. Identify main concepts (keywords)
3. Identify synonyms, alternate words and/or related words
4. Try different combinations of keywords

Example: How does exposure to smokers affect children who have asthma?

What are the main concepts or keywords?
.....smoking, children, asthma

Think of synonyms, alternate words or/and related words.
.....secondhand smoke, smokers..... toddler, pediatric, child .... allergies, breathing problems

Develop your search strategy using the terms above.

Mix and match terms. If one keyword doesn't work, try to vary your keywords with synonyms.

Boolean Operators

Boolean operators help to narrow or broaden your search. The most useful are AND, OR, NOT which help to connect keywords or concepts.

boolean

You can use more than one Boolean connector in the same search statement:

  • Depression AND Teenagers OR Adolescents

You should have a research topic and a list of some keywords as well as a search strategy.

CRJU 2010 Universal Justice Paper

Purpose:

Over the course of this semester, we will discuss various forms of Human Rights violations. As you will see, there are various violations that have historically, and currently, occurred throughout time. This paper will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the topic you choose. This class provides a high-level overview of different Human Rights violations, but this assignment allows you to explore one in depth. Also, it allows you to develop your skills in writing and citing research in APA format.

Assignment:

You will write a 1000 word (minimum) research paper on the subsection that you choose.  You should have at least two reference sources cited in your essay. These outside references should be used to build on theory and scholarly insight to answer the below questions. Below is a rough outline of what I’m looking for.

  • Why did you choose this violation?
  • Why is this topic considered Human Right? (think “Categories of Human Rights”)
  • Utilize academic references to support your argument on the importance of this human right’s violation inclusion in the conversation.
  • Describe the violation in detail—outline the “Who, What, How, Why”
  • How is this right being treated internationally? (Are other nations implementing steps to assure these rights are universal?)
  • What are the theoretical principles underlying this Human Right?

Please utilize APA format for this essay. You can find more resources below in the “Format” section. You will also need to find two (2) outside resources to support your thoughts.

Please note- Wikipedia is NOT to be used in this assignment, or any of the assignments for this class.

Also, please be very careful and ensure your work is your own. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a zero on this essay. Utilize the APA reference outline on the Owl Purdue website to ensure proper citations in your essay (both in-text and reference page).
