Unflattening is a graphic novel by artist and researcher Nick Sousanis that was originally the first dissertation from Columbia University to be written in a comic book format. Written and drawn entirely as comics, Unflattening is an experiment in visual thinking. Nick Sousanis defies conventional forms of scholarly discourse to offer readers both a stunning work of graphic art and a serious inquiry into the ways humans construct knowledge
I picked this page because i thought it was absolutely beautiful in the references. The way it followed the human and animal stages of life was incredibly beautiful and i thought it would make an interesting printed piece.
Scanner definition- A scanner is a device that scans documents and converts them into digital data.
Practical use: We used the scanner to copy the picture from our 2d books to create a digital copy.
Laser-cutting definition- Laser cutting is a method that uses lasers to cut through touch materials
Practical use: We used laser cutting to change the Medium and design of the picture. Not only did we go from paper to wood, we also went 2D to 3D.
Adobe Photoshop definition- Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor.
Practical use: We used Photoshop to change the color contrast and change the size of our document.
Adobe Illustrator definition - Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor
Practical Use: We used Illustrator to define all of our tiny tiny pixels and by using illustrator we were able to keep the integrity of our picture. Thus we printed them from there.
Step 1: This is the original picture from Book. As you can see i had trouble scanning the picture from Book to computer but that is normal when you are changing from Medium to Medium.
p {color:red }
Step 2. This was my final picture after i had gone in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and worked with my picture a little. Doing things like brightening the contrast and making the shadows more apparent so i could get rid of those grays and come out with the best "Black and white Image possible".
Step 3: This was while the image was in the Laser printer,printing. As you can see the wood had taken pretty good to the image and i was pretty excited about it!!
Step 4: This is the final process of my Laser print. Although it didn't come out too clear i am still proud of it because i put alot of work into those project and i chose a particularly difficult page
I noticed that text or pictures done on a white background came out way clearer than it did on a black background. This makes sence because the printer doesnt have diffrening values on shading so the proximity of black and gray became even more difficult to distinguish once it went through the printer thus making the 2 colors blend.
Marshall McLuhan is philosipher who had a great understand of media. One of his strongest observations was how when you change the medium you change the message and also the problems that come withen that. And truly in my project i saw the problems that came with changing the medium. The first problem i had to overcome was moving my page from the book to a digital file.Above you can clearly see how blurry the first can was and then with photoshop i was able fix the size and the constrast to make the color more visible. The second probelm i ran into was when i tried to print the image. I didnt know the printer woould so such a horrible job at distinguishing the grays from the black once printed. And ultimatly it affects the message as Mcluhan said becuase you cant read some if the text on my final project.
