Data Management Planning & DMPTool

Many funding agencies and publishers require that research data be made publicly available as a condition of funding or publication. The following resources introduce the basics of data management planning, sharing, and archiving, including preparing data management plans using DMPTool as well as strategies for preparing and licensing data for open access.

Learning outcomes: By reviewing the following materials, you will be able to: 1) describe current and developing trends in research data management planning and sharing in the context of grant funding and publication, 2) analyze and evaluate example data management plans and adapt them to your own research, 3) describe basic practices for preparing and licensing data for open access, and 4) create a data management plan using DMPTool.

Get Started

To get started, review the following workshop slides to become familiar with basic Data Management Planning concepts and resources. When you have completed this, continue to the DMPTool workshop slides below.

Data Lifecycle: Plan & Propose, Create & Collect, Analyze & Assure, Prepare & Publish, Curate & Share.

Plan & Propose

To get the most out of your data, plan early how you will collect, use, and share it. Many funders now require data management plans (DMPs), and many publishers require that data be made publicly available.

Create & Collect / Analyze & Assure

Ensure that you are following best practices while actively collecting, caring for, and analyzing your data. Host, secure, and share your "working" data in Georgia Southern Commons during the active phase of research.

Prepare & Publish / Curate & Share

Prepare your data for deposit and archiving in a data repository like Georgia Southern Commons or OpenICPSR.
