SUMMARY OF REQUIRED ANATOMICAL STRUCTURES

Blood vessels of the lower extremity

  1. Superior Gluteal Artery- largest branch of the internal iliac artery; supplies structures within the gluteal region and pelvis
  2. Inferior Gluteal Artery - terminal branch of the internal iliac artery; supplies the gluteal and thigh regions
  3. Medial Circumflex Femoral Artery - artery in the superior region of the thigh; supplies blood to the neck of the femur
  4. Femoral Artery - continuation of the external iliac artery; divides into several smaller branches; becomes the popliteal artery as it passes posterior to the knee
  5. Femoral Vein - drains the upper leg; receives blood from the great saphenous vein, the deep femoral vein, and the femoral circumflex vein; becomes the external iliac vein
  6. Ascending branch of Medial Circumflex Femoral Artery - small artery in the thigh that supplies blood to the head of the femur
  7. Descending branch of Lateral Circumflex Femoral Artery - supplies blood to the soft tissues around the hip joint
  8. Deep Femoral Artery - branch of the femoral artery; gives rise to the lateral circumflex arteries
  9. Popliteal Artery - continuation of the femoral artery posterior to the knee; branches into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries
  10. Popliteal Vein - drains the region behind the knee and forms from the fusion of the fibular, anterior, and posterior tibial veins; flows into the femoral vein
  11. Medial Superior Artery of Knee (Genicular) - rises from the femoral artery to provide blood to the medial, superior region of the knee
  12. Lateral Superior Artery of Knee (Genicular) - rises from the femoral artery to provide blood to the lateral, superior region of the knee
  13. Medial Inferior Artery of Knee (Genicular) - rises from the femoral artery to provide blood to the medial, inferior region of the knee
  14. Lateral Inferior Artery of Knee (Genicular) - rises from the femoral artery to provide blood to the lateral, inferior region of the knee
  15. Posterior Tibial Artery - branches from the popliteal artery and gives rise to the fibular or peroneal artery; provides blood to the muscles and integument on the posterior surface of the tibial region
  16. Posterior Tibial Vein - drains the posterior surface of the tibia and joins the popliteal vein
  17. Anterior Tibial Artery - branches from the popliteal artery; located between the tibia and fibula, and supplies blood to the muscles and integument of the anterior tibial region
  18. Fibular (Peroneal) Artery -  branches from the popliteal artery; found on the lateral aspect of the lower leg
  19. Lateral Anterior Malleolar Artery - found around the distal end of the fibula

The Lymphatic System

  1. Pharyngeal tonsil - sometimes referred to as the adenoid when swollen; located at the back of the throat on the roof of the posterior superior wall of the nasopharynx
  2. Spleen - located in the upper left quadrant; major secondary lymphoid organ
